Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 9

A very quiet night as only Iowa, Daytona and Arizona played. Not a lot of scoring, either.

Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were run over by the New Orleans Zephyrs (Marlins), 9-0.

Starter Jake Arrieta, whom Phil Rogers was comparing to Matt Harvey yesterday, was rocked for seven runs on ten hits over 3.2 innings. To be fair, four of those runs were unearned after a Donnie Murphy error. Arrieta walked one and struck out three. He also had two wild pitches.

The I-Cubs managed only three hits.

Tennessee Smokies

Travel day. They take on Jackson tomorrow.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs were bitten by the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 4-3.

It was a strong start for Ben Wells, who had allowed only one hit through six innings. Unfortunately, he started the seventh inning and hit a batter and walked one before being removed. Both of those runners would eventually score. Wells pitched 6+ innings and allowed two runs on one hit. He walked one, struck out four and hit two batters.

Frank Del Valle took the loss when he allowed the two inherited runners from Wells to score and two more of his own in the seventh inning. Del Valle allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in the one inning he pitched. He did not walk anyone.

Center fielder Pin-Chieh Chen went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. He stole two bases. Shortstop Elliot Soto was 2 for 4 with a double. Left fielder Zeke DeVoss was 1 for 3 with two walks and a stolen base. The hit was an RBI single in the second inning.

Kane County Cougars

Off day. At South Bend tomorrow.

Boise Hawks

Spent 12 hours driving to Vancouver.

AZL Cubs

Lost to the Diamondbacks, 5-1.
