Cubs vs. Nationals Preview, Thursday 8/22, 1:20 CT: A Little History Lesson

The Cubs are having one of their worst home seasons in club history. This is one reason it's a good thing this homestand is ending.

Brian Kersey

The worst winning percentage for a Cubs team in home games in a single season is .339. That was in 1994, a strike season, where the Cubs went 20-39 at home.

The worst winning percentage for a Cubs team in home games in a non-strike season is .395. That has been posted three times: 1962, 1966 and 1974, a 32-49 record each time.

The Cubs' current home winning percentage is .385; that would translate to a 31-50 record, worst in franchise history in a full season. They would have to go 7-9 in their remaining 16 home games to avoid doing that, and 8-8 to avoid tying the previous worsts.

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2013 Chicago Cubs.

Cubs lineup:

Castro SS, Rizzo 1B, Navarro C, Schierholtz RF, Lake CF, Murphy 3B, Bogusevic LF, Barney 2B, Wood P

Hey, Anthony Rizzo hit two HR yesterday batting second. Why not?

The Nationals lineup was not available at the time I wrote this post. Please check the BCB Twitter feed for the Nats lineup.

Travis Wood has not faced the Nats in his two years as a Cub. He has faced just three current Nats (Scott Hairston, Jayson Werth, Adam LaRoche), who are 1-for-15 against him. Wood has not had a good August (5.09 ERA), so it'd be nice to see him get back on the right track with this start.

Stephen Strasburg last faced the Cubs on Opening Day 2012 at Wrigley Field; there are just two players left on the team who played in that game (Darwin Barney and Starlin Castro). Current Cubs are 5-for-20 against Strasburg, a very small sample size. Strasburg has had some dominant starts this year, but his numbers overall are just good, not great.

Today's game is on WGN.

SB Nation game preview

Please visit our SB Nation Nationals site Federal Baseball.

Here's the scoop on game threads for 2013. You'll find the game preview -- like this one -- posting as the first link in the StoryStream™, which will then contain all the overflow threads and the recap. The recap will also be on the front page as a separate post; once I post a game recap, the stream for each game will be retitled "Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads" so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

In general, game previews will post two hours before game time. Exception: for day games after night games, that will usually be 90 minutes.

You will also be able to find the First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in this StoryStream™. As I've done for each regular-season game for several years now, we'll have the First Pitch thread at five minutes before game time (moved up from actual game time per your requests), then an overflow one hour, two hours and 2:45 after game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
