Cubs vs. Brewers Preview, Thursday 9/19, 1:10 CT: No Fun With Numbers

Before this road trip started, I predicted the Cubs would go 2-9. With one game to go, they're 3-7.

This photo pretty much sums up the Cubs' 2013 season.

The Cubs are 5-21 at Miller Park since the start of 2011.

The Cubs are 5-13 against the Brewers this year.

The Cubs are 2-7 in Miller Park this year.

The Cubs are 6-11 this month.

Since the Cubs' sweep of the Giants in San Francisco in late July, they are 15-31.

Had enough yet? I have. On to today's lineups and pitcher preview.

Jake Arrieta's first start as a Cub was against the Brewers July 30 at Wrigley Field; he gave up just two hits in six innings. Great start! His second start against Milwaukee, also at Wrigley September 7, not so great. Just three hits allowed, but also three walks, a couple of triples, and four earned runs. This is the thing that must have driven Orioles fans nuts about Arrieta. Obvious talent, not enough command. Above are Arrieta's stats with the Cubs only; here are his overall numbers for this year:

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2013 - Jake Arrieta 3-4 12 12 0 0 0 0 62.1 52 39 38 8 38 54 5.49 1.44

The Cubs hit Kyle Lohse pretty hard September 6 at Wrigley Field. Junior Lake hit a grand slam off him. In his next start, September 13 against the Reds, Lohse threw a four-hit complete game. Which is the real Lohse? A clue can be found in his home/road splits; he's made 15 starts at Miller Park, 15 on the road. Home ERA: 2.85, WHIP 1.133. Road ERA: 4.15, WHIP 1.281. Since this game is at Miller Park: doom.

Today's game is on WGN.

SB Nation game preview

Please visit our SB Nation Brewers site Brew Crew Ball. The usual caution is advised.

Here's the scoop on game threads for 2013. You'll find the game preview -- like this one -- posting as the first link in the StoryStream™, which will then contain all the overflow threads and the recap. The recap will also be on the front page as a separate post; once I post a game recap, the stream for each game will be retitled "Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads" so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

In general, game previews will post two hours before game time. Exception: for day games after night games, that will usually be 90 minutes.

You will also be able to find the First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in this StoryStream™. As I've done for each regular-season game for several years now, we'll have the First Pitch thread at five minutes before game time (moved up from actual game time per your requests), then an overflow one hour, two hours and 2:45 after game time.
