Cubs vs. Marlins Preview, Tuesday 9/3, 7:05 CT: Plenty Of Seats Available

Tuesday night's crowd could be among the smallest of the last 15-20 years.

Brian Kersey

ICYMI, here's the scoop on the Cubs' latest recalls, made earlier this afternoon.

Meanwhile, regarding tonight's game: school is back in session. The weather has cooled off. The Cubs are bad, and the Marlins are worse.

All of those factors could combine to make for the smallest paid crowd at Wrigley Field since the mid-1990's, and the in-house count is likely to be even smaller.

Thus is the state of our team in September, 2013.

Cubs lineup:

Castro SS, Valbuena 3B, Rizzo 1B, Schierholtz RF, Sweeney CF, Murphy 2B, Bogusevic LF, Castillo C, Jackson P

Poor Logan Watkins. Still can't get a start even when Darwin Barney gets the day off.

Marlins lineup:

Coghlan 3B, Solano 2B, Yelich LF. Stanton RF, Ruggiano CF, Morrison 1B, Hechavarria SS, Mathis C, Koehler P

Edwin Jackson faced the Marlins April 25 in Miami. Check out that boxscore -- the results were typical Edwin. The Cubs managed to win that game, and it's also noteworthy because ... that's the last save Carlos Marmol posted as a Cub. Anyway, Jackson had a terrible August -- 5.97 ERA in six starts -- so let's hope September is better.

It should be noted that Jackson has 14 losses, which leads the National League. Individual pitcher wins and losses don't mean that much any more, but over the last 20 years (since 1993), just four pitchers have lost more than that in a single season for the Cubs (Mike Morgan, 15 in 1993; Greg Maddux, 15 in 2005; Frank Castillo, 16 in 1996; Steve Trachsel, 18 in 1999).

Tom Koehler made a one-inning relief appearance against the Cubs April 26 in Miami, retiring Scott Feldman, Dave Sappelt and Starlin Castro. That probably means nothing for this start; Koehler also had a bad month of August, posting a 4.86 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in six starts.

Today's game is on CSN Chicago.

Please visit our SB Nation Marlins site Fish Stripes.

Here's the scoop on game threads for 2013. You'll find the game preview -- like this one -- posting as the first link in the StoryStream™, which will then contain all the overflow threads and the recap. The recap will also be on the front page as a separate post; once I post a game recap, the stream for each game will be retitled "Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads" so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

In general, game previews will post two hours before game time. Exception: for day games after night games, that will usually be 90 minutes.

You will also be able to find the First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in this StoryStream™. As I've done for each regular-season game for several years now, we'll have the First Pitch thread at five minutes before game time (moved up from actual game time per your requests), then an overflow one hour, two hours and 2:45 after game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
