Four more players have been added to the Cubs' September roster:
#Cubs roster moves: Grimm, Boscan, Raley recalled from Iowa. Rosscup selected from Iowa. Sappelt DFA to make room for Rosscup
— Carrie Muskat (@CarrieMuskat) September 3, 2013
For those of you who wanted to see Zach Rosscup, congratulations -- you guessed right. Rosscup has a real shot at making the 2014 bullpen, and along with Brooks Raley, he'll give Dale Sveum two extra lefthanded options in the bullpen the rest of this month. Great! More long games while Dale trudges to the mound to make extra late-inning pitching changes.
Rosscup was acquired in the Matt Garza deal from the Rays three years ago, so there's another shot at getting some value from that trade.
Justin Grimm, acquired for Garza in the deal that sent Matt to the Rangers, has a chance to make the 2014 rotation, but I'm assuming he'll pitch in relief the rest of the year. There was no mention of Scott Baker joining the team; he might be done in a Cubs uniform, though I have nothing but my own speculation for that.
J.C. Boscan will give the Cubs flexibility to pinch-run for Welington Castillo or Dioner Navarro late in games. He's no prospect; he'll be 34 in December. This is a "thank-you" kind of recall.
I don't think anyone will miss Dave Sappelt.
And, apparently, no Mike Olt until spring training.
