Al has been good enough to ask me to join him at a special event for season ticket holders tomorrow. It's a Q&A session with Theo Epstein and Crane Kenney.
After rearranging my schedule a tad, I was able to accept his invitation. I'm excited to go. I can think of a million questions, yet none feel quite right just yet. That leaves me channeling a little of Eminem's Lose Yourself, with a slight modification.
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance toblowask This opportunity comes once in a lifetime yo
I can't imagine that the opportunity for me to talk to these Cub execs would come around often. So what do I ask? I'd love to sit down and just pick Theo's baseball brain for an hour, but that's not going to happen. And the smooth-talking leader of the Cubs' baseball side is most likely going to deliver his well-polished answers that say a little, sound good, and don't really divulge anything concrete. I mean that largely as a compliment -- I'd love to know the "real" answers, but I'm glad Theo won't tip his hand.
On the other hand, there's the chance to present Crane with a question for the business side. And I think we're all aware there's plenty of fertile ground to work with there. He seems most likely to talk around a question and spin a response that deflects any criticism in favor of an opportunity to talk about something the club has done well.
So, dear reader, what would you ask? What would you ask if you had the "one chance of a lifetime?"
Don't lose yourself in the discussion.
