Yet another Cubs career ends before it starts:
#Reds have claimed RHP Brett Marshall off waivers from the #Cubs
— Carrie Muskat (@CarrieMuskat) February 12, 2014
In case you were counting, Marshall was a Cub for 51 days, as he was claimed from the Yankees on waivers December 23. This move would appear to be the one to open a roster spot for the still-officially-unsigned Jason Hammel:
Losing RHP Brett Marshall to #Reds could open spot on #Cubs 40-man roster for Jason Hammel. That deal has not been finalized yet

I'm not sure I understand the reason for these sorts of waiver claims; there doesn't appear to have been any real intention for Marshall to make the team, and it seemed almost certain that the Cubs were going to make another major-league move before spring training, which officially starts Thursday with pitchers and catchers reporting to Mesa. Roster Jenga, is all it is; I don't really see the point.
Anyway, farewell, Brett. Good luck in Cincinnati.
