Cubs vs. White Sox at Glendale Preview, Friday 3/21, 3:05 CT

It's not the BP Cup. (What is?) But the Chicago crosstown rivals have their first 2014 meeting today.

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- The Cubs aren't going to be very good this year.

The White Sox just might be worse. They are carrying two 1B/DH on their roster -- Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko -- who can't seem to hit at all any more. They're a combined 13-for-60 this spring (.216) with no home runs. Starting 2B Gordon Beckham is hitting .167, slated backup catcher Josh Phegley was just sent to the minor leagues, and the only projected member of the Sox starting rotation who's having any sort of a decent spring is today's starter John Danks. Jose Quintana, who faced nine hitters Tuesday without retiring any of them, has allowed 20 earned runs in six innings.

Somehow, that's translated into a White Sox spring record (7-10) that is about the same as the Cubs' 10-14. (The discrepancy in the total games played is partly explained by the White Sox having three ties this spring.)

So this one oughta be fun. Or weird. Or sad, I guess. Try to enjoy the game anyway.

Cubs lineup:

Bonifacio 2B, Lake CF, Rizzo 1B, Olt DH, Ruggiano LF, Baez SS, Kalish RF, Valbuena 3B, Baker C

So, Mike Olt still in the lineup, but back at DH. One game at third base and that's it?

White Sox lineup:

Eaton CF, Semien 2B, Abreu 1B, Dunn DH, Garcia RF, Gillaspie 3B, Viciedo LF, Ramirez SS, Flowers C

With the exception of Gordon Beckham, this is very likely the White Sox Opening Day lineup.

Chris Rusin, still in the running for the rotation's fifth spot, will start for the Cubs.

While Rusin is toiling in Glendale, Travis Wood will throw in a minor league game at the Cubs complex in Mesa (1 pm AZ time if you are in the area and want to go).

John Danks, as noted above the only Sox starter who's having a decent spring, gets the start for the White Sox.

Today's game is on cubs.com with Len Kasper and Mick Gillispie. It will be televised live on CSN Chicago (with the White Sox announcers), and you can also watch online if you have a MLB.TV subscription. Outside the Chicago market this game is being picked up by MLB Network.

MLB.com Gameday

Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

For spring-training games, we'll have a first-pitch thread at game time and one overflow thread, 90 minutes after game time (because I know how you all like overflow threads!). For today's game, that will be 3 p.m. CT and 4:30 p.m. CT. These threads will not post individually onto the front page; instead, you can find links to them in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page. They will also appear in this StoryStream™. The pitcher box and regular-season stats will return on Opening Day.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
