The top two clubs failed to find any offense, but the lower two rode some great pitching to victory.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were run over by the Round Rock Express (Rangers), 5-1.

Eric Jokisch started and allowed four runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings. One of the four runs was unearned.

Third baseman Christian Villanueva was 2 for 4.

Shortstop Javier Baez was 1 for 4 and did not strike out. It's a start.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were extinguished by the Mississippi Braves, 2-0.

Corey Black pitched the first 5.2 innings and took the loss after he allowed two runs on five hits. Black struck out six and walked three, although he did hit two more batters. (Actually, it was the same guy twice.)

First baseman Dustin Geiger was 2 for 4.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs debunked the Ft. Myers Miracle (Twins), 2-1.

Starter Felix Pena kept alive his streak of allowing one earned run or fewer in all eight starts this season. Pena pitched four innings and allowed one run on four hits. He struck out two and did not issue a walk.

Zach Cates got the win in relief. (Not because Pena didn't go five. Cates was on the mound when Daytona took the lead for good.) Cates tossed three scoreless innings and allowed one hit. He struck out two and also didn't walk anyone.

Andrew McKirahan got his second save with two scoreless innings, but it wasn't easy. McKirahan loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the ninth on an error, a walk and a single. But he struck out the next two batters and got a foul out to end the game. McKirahan struck out three total batters.

Center fielder Albert Almora was 2 for 4 with an RBI groundout. He scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning on a double play.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars brought the Quad City River Bandits (Astros) to justice, 4-2.

Paul Blackburn had a really good night tonight. Blackburn allowed only one run on two hits over six innings. Blackburn struck out eight and walked only one.

Tyler Bremer tossed a scoreless ninth for his second save. He did not allow a hit but he did walk one while striking out two.

The Cougars won this game with a three-run fifth inning, aided by two River Bandits' errors.

DH Ben Carhart was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
