Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were flattened by the Round Rock Express (Rangers), 4-2.

Starter Chris Rusin went seven innings and allowed four runs on nine hits. One of the four runs was unearned. Rusin walked one and struck out five.

DH Josh Vitters was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Justin Ruggiano started his rehab assignment tonight and played six innings in right field. He was 2 for 3 and scored a run.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies snapped their four-game losing streak by topping the Mississippi Braves. 3-1.

Pierce Johnson did not allow a hit or a run over his four inning start. Johnson did walk two and hit one batter. Johnson struck out two.

Tony Zych got the win because Johnson did not go five innings. Zych allowed one run on three hits over two innings. He did not walk anyone, but he did hit back-to-back batters to lead off the sixth inning. On the second one, he managed to take out the batter and the umpire with the same pitch. Zych did not have a strikeout, but he did get a huge double play in that sixth inning.

Armando Rivero tossed a two-inning save, his eighth save of the season. Rivero did not allow a run or a hit. He walked one and struck out two.

Kris Bryant was ill and was a late scratch from the starting lineup. However, he did pinch-hit for Johnson in the fifth inning and he hit a two-run double that gave Tennessee the lead for good.

Right fielder Jae-Hoon Ha was 2 for 4 and scored once. Left fielder John Andreoli was 2 for 4 with a stolen base. Shortstop Wes Darvill was 2 for 3 with a walk.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs whipped the Ft. Myers Miracle (Twins), 4-2.

Starter Yao-Lin Wang allowed only one hit over five scoreless innings. Wang struck out four and walked three.

Nathan Dorris' first appearance for Daytona was a rough one as he twice blew a one-run lead in the 2.2 innings he pitched. But he got his first Florida State League win when Daytona scored twice in the top of the 8th. Dorris allowed the two runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out two.

Austin Reed got his second save. He did not allow a run over 1.1 innings, although he did allow a double and a walk with one out in the ninth. But he induced a 6-3 double play to end the game.

Right fielder Pin-Chieh Chen was the big bat for Daytona today, going 2 for 4 with two doubles and a walk. He had an RBI and a run scored.

Center fielder Albert Almora had his sixth straight game of at least two hits, going 2 for 5. He also had two outfield assists, cutting down a runner at the plate both times. (Although one putout was 8-4-2, hitting the cutoff man Tim Saunders.)

Catcher Willson Contreras went 2 for 3 with a walk. He had two RBI and one run scored.

Daytona was greatly aided by two Miracle errors in the eighth inning.
