Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 11

The Smokies won without a Kris Bryant home run.

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs and the Tennessee Smokies announced a four-year extension on their Player Development Contract. The Smokies will be a Cubs affiliate through 2018.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were mauled by the Fresno Grizzlies (Giants), 10-1. I sure picked a good game to go to.

Starter Chris Rusin got knocked around pretty good, giving up seven runs on nine hits in only three innings. Rusin struck out four and walked only one. On the bright side, he got a solid single and fielded his position well. He just didn't do that pitching thing well.

Zac Rosscup pitched one inning in a rehab assignment and struck out the side.

First baseman Josh Vitters was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Left fielder Ryan Kalish was 2 for 4. He stole two bases.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies edged the Mississippi Braves, 3-2.

Eduardo Figueroa pitched the first five innings and allowed two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out three.

P.J. Francescon pitched the top of the eighth and got the win when Tennessee scored a run in the bottom of the inning. He allowed a hit and a walk, but no runs. He did not have a strike out.

Armando Rivero pitched the top of the ninth and got his tenth save. He allowed a two-out walk, but no other runs. He struck out two.

Anthony Giansanti reached in the eighth on an error and would come around to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Giansanti was 1 for 4 and scored two runs.

Third baseman Kris Bryant was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs were rained out. Double-header tomorrow.

Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars split a doubleheader with the Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals), losing game one 2-1 and winning the second game 4-3.

It was a tough loss for Tyler Skulina, who allowed two unearned runs on five hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out three.

Third baseman Jordan Hankins had an RBI double in the first inning. He was 1 for 3.

Daury Torrez started and won game two. He allowed three runs four hits over six innings. He struck out two and walked one.

Tyler Bremer pitched a perfect bottom of the seventh for his eighth save. He struck out all three batters swinging.

Center fielder Jacob Hannemann was 2 for 4 and scored a run. Shortstop Carlos Penalver went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored.

DH Ben Carhart went 2 for 4 and scored a run. Third baseman Jordan Hankins went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.
