Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 21

Daytona is in first place. Thank goodness for split seasons.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were shut out by the Albuquerque Isotopes (Dodgers), 4-0.

Chris Rusin started and took the loss. Rusin allowed four runs on nine hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Catcher Welington Castillo was 2 for 3 with two walks in a rehab appearance.

Chris Valaika was 1 for 3 with a double. Josh Vitters was 1 for 4 with a double.

Kris Bryant was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were caught by the Chattanooga Lookouts (Dodgers), 4-1.

Corey Black saw his record fall to 2-5 after he allowed two runs on five  hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Center fielder Jae-Hoon Ha was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs blasted the Tampa Yankees, 11-4.

Starter Justin Amlung got his first Florida State League win. He pitched the first five innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out one.

Austin Kirk got the save for pitching three innings, his first save of the season. He allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two.

Left fielder Rock Shoulders hit a three-run home run in the third inning, his fourth of the season. Shoulders was 3 for4 with a double and a walk.

Third baseman Jordan Hankins hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, his first of the season for Daytona and his fourth overall. Hankins was 3 for 4 with a walk.

DH Wes Darvill went 4 for 6 with a double. He had one run scored and one RBI.

Center fielder Zeke DeVoss was 2 for 6 with a double. He scored once and had one RBI. Shortstop Marco Hernandez was 2 for 5 and scored twice.

Kane County Cougars

This probably won't surprise many of you, but they were rained out. Doubleheader tomorrow.

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks lost to the Spokane Indians (Rangers) 3-2.

Trevor Clifton started and was pretty effective, allowing one run on three hits over 4.1 innings. Clifton struck out seven and walked two.

David Garner gave up two runs in the bottom of the eighth to blow the lead and take the loss. Garner pitched two innings and allowed the two runs on three hits. One of the two runs was unearned. He struck out three and didn't walk anyone.

Varonex Cuevas hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning to tie the score at one apiece. Cuevas was 2 for 3 with a walk.

20th round pick Alex Tomasovich made his professional debut and went 2 for 4 with a double.

Arizona Cubs

Lost to the Diamondbacks, 10-9.

For those who don't know, I generally do not give a recap of Arizona Summer League games. Instead, I just mention anything that might be of interest.

Tonight, Jorge Soler played DH and was 3 for 5 with two doubles. You may say "big deal, he clobbered some kid fresh out of high school." but one of the doubles was off of Archie Bradley, who started this game for the DBacks.
