Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 80

And that's how you end a doubleheader with a resounding thud.

Don't feel too bad, Starlin. You found the correct podium this game.

David Banks

Well, things looked okay for four innings.  And then one rainstorm, one homer, a couple of comebackers and one Shakespearean performance later...

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Luis Valbuena (.225). Finally found the Hero podium again on the final game of the homestand.
  • Hero - Starlin Castro (.033). Well, he had to nullify the Goat from earlier in the day.
  • Sidekick - Mike Olt (.021). Wait... huh? A pinch-walk with the Cubs down four in the fifth was good for third place?  Yikes.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Jeff Samardzija (-.432). I'm not sure what hurt him more, the rain delay or the bad acting by Nate McLouth.
  • Goat - Darwin Barney (-.090). Eventually he had to make an out that was going to matter. The law of averages says so.
  • Kid - Chris Coghlan (-.068). Last had a hit leading off on June 21, and is 2-for-29 this season in the leadoff spot. Please make it stop.

Valbuena returns to the Heroes after 11 games away, while Samardzija gets the post-rain Billy Goat.
