Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 97

New, 7 comments

Despite the heroics of Anthony Rizzo, the Cubs lose for the third straight time after leading the game and head back to Chicago on a five-game slide.

Your top podium players, both in one shot.

I'm sure I'm not the only person whose heart skipped a beat when Rizzo went careening over the railing and into the camera pit in the sixth. Thankfully he walked away from that one without a scratch.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Anthony Rizzo (.092). Big plays with both the bat and the glove.
  • Hero - Arismendy Alcantara (.056). The RBI double in the eighth salvaged an otherwise subpar trip to Arizona.
  • Sidekick Chris Coghlan (.049). Another nice day with a pair of doubles.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Luis Valbuena (-.138). The rough July continues, now hitting 7-for-48 this month.
  • Goat - Nate Schierholtz (-.126). And then there's this slump: hitless in his last 18 at-bats.
  • Kid - James Russell (-.116). Faced two batters and didn't retire either of them.

UPDATED RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 97 (Changes in Bold, Notations Below):

x - Player not on 25-man roster.
y - Player not on 40-man roster.
z - Player no longer with Cubs.

Rizzo adds to his lead on the plus/minus chart, while Schierholtz becomes the first Cub this season to hit the minus-20 mark.
