Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were drenched by the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals), 7-3.

Dan Straily made his Cubs debut and struggled in the second inning, allowing four runs. He didn't get any help from his defense though as an error by Kris Bryant made all four runs unearned. Other than that second inning, he was good. He pitched five innings and allowed four unearned runs on five hits. Straily struck out three and walked one. And he kept the ball in the park.

All of Iowa's offense came on a three-run home run in the first inning by shortstop Javier Baez. It was Baez's 14th home run of the season. He was 1 for 4.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were doused by the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 7-1.

Pierce Johnson pitched the first four innings and allowed three runs on six hits, including a pair of solo home runs. Johnson struck out six and walked three.

Jorge Soler played the whole game in right field and provided almost all of Tennessee's offense. Soler was 3 for 4 with a double and his second home run in as many games,. It was a monster shot to lead off the top of the ninth inning and kept Tennessee from getting shut out.

DH Charles Cutler was 2 for 4 with a double. Catcher Luis Flores was 2 for 3.

Shortstop Addison Russell is off to a slow start with the Smokies. He was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts tonight.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs swept a doubleheader from the Lakeland Flying Tigers4-3 in eight innings and 6-1.

Tayler Scott started game one and allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings. He struck out two and didn't walk anyone.

Austin Kirk relieved Scott in the sixth inning and allowed a walk and an RBI double to the first two batters he faced to tie the score. But he pitched out of a jam after that and got the win when Daytona retook the lead in the top of the eighth. Kirk pitched two innings and allowed one run on two hits. He walked two and struck out two.

Stephen Perakslis came in the game in the bottom of the eighth and allowed singles to the first two batters he faced. But after a 3-6-3 double play and a ground out to third, he ended the game and got his second save.

Center fielder Albert Almora hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning, his fourth on the season. He was 1 for 4.

Left fielder Bijan Rademacher drove home Wes Darvill with an RBI single to give the D-Cubs the lead in the top of the eighth. Rademacher was 2 for 4 and also scored one run.

First baseman Rock Shoulders hit a solo home run in the third inning. It was his sixth on the season. Shoulders was 1 for 3.

In the second game, Rob Zastryzny started and pitched three scoreless innings, giving up just one hit. He struck out five and walked no one.

Justin Amlung pitched the final four innings and got the win because Zastryzny didn't go five. Amlung allowed one run on three hits. He struck out four and didn't walk anyone.

Like he did in the first game, center fielder Albert Almora hit a home run in the top of the first inning, but this time he did it with a man on. Almora now has five home runs this season. Almora was 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs scored before he exited in the fifth inning with cramping.

It's the Albert and Bijan Show in Florida as Bijan Rademacher hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, also his fifth on the year. Rademacher was 1 for 3.

New Daytona Cub Billy McKinney played in both games and went 1 for 3 in both games.
