Kane County Cougars

The Kane County Cougars sunk the Lake County Captains (Indians), 4-3 in game one of the Midwest League Championship Series.

At first, starter Jen-Ho Tseng didn't look like his usual self tonight, as he gave up one run in the first inning and then a bases-loaded double in the second inning that scored two runs. But with the runners on second and third and no one out in the second, Tseng bore down and kept the Captains from scoring any more runs in the second. Then he and the Cougars bullpen kept the Captains from scoring again the rest of the game.

Tseng's final line was five innings pitched, allowing three runs on six hits. One of those runs was unearned. Tseng struck out eight and only walked one, although he did hit one batter.

Ben Wells pitched two scoreless innings and gave up one hit. He struck out one.

Jasvir Rakkar pitched the top of the eighth and got into some trouble after a leadoff walk and two wild pitches put a runner on second with no outs and third with two outs. But he struck out the final two batters of the inning so no damage was done.

Francisco Carrillo pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save. He did not strike anyone out.

When the Captains scored in the top of the first inning, the Cougars answered right back when Shawon Dunston led off the bottom of the first with a single and Mark Zagunis hit a two-run home run to give Kane County the lead.

After the Captains took the lead back in the top of the second, the Cougars seized the lead again thanks in large part to Dunston. He had an RBI single in the second inning. He then stole second base, went to third on an error and scored on an error.

Dunston's final line on the night was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. He had two steals.

Zagunis was 1 for 4 with the home run. Jeimer Candelario was 2 for 4.

The two teams will play game two of the series tomorrow (Thursday) at 6 pm at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva. It will be your last chance to see the Cougars play in Kane County this season. Duane Underwood will take the mound for Kane County and the Captains will answer with Jordan Milbrath.

Fans are also invited to see the team off on their bus ride to Lake County on Friday morning at 10:45 am at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. So if you're into that sort of thing, make it out there to see the guys off.
