The MLB awards for the month of August came out today and the Cubs Kyle Hendricks was honored with the NL Rookie of the Month Award.
Hendricks was 4-0 with a 1.69 ERA in the month of August. The Cubs won all six games that he started in August.
Hendricks, who came over from the Rangers in the Ryan Dempster trade, made his major league debut in July. In his six starts in August, he allowed two or fewer runs in all of them. He held opposing hitters to a .206 batting average and he struck out 20 batters in 37.1 innings and walked only six.
Hendricks was the first Cubs rookie to win at least four games in a month and not lose a game since Vito Valentinetti accomplished the feat in June of 1956. He's the first Cubs rookie pitcher to win four games in August since Pat Malone went 4-1 in 1928.
Hendricks is the first Cub to win NL Rookie of the Month honors since Anthony Rizzo in July of 2012. He is the only Cubs pitcher to ever win the award, which began in 2001.
So congratulations to Kyle Hendricks and may this be the first of many awards for him throughout his career.
Because of this news, the preview for tonight's game has been moved back to 5:30 Chicago time.
