Cubs vs. Pirates Preview, Saturday 9/6, 2 p.m. CT (Suspended Game Resumption)

The Cubs and Pirates will actually be in action an hour before the original time of Saturday's game, to finish Friday's.

David Banks

So, here we go again with another suspended game, just a little more than two weeks after the last one at Wrigley Field against the Giants. You should be pretty familiar with how suspended games work after that one; they'll start up at 2 p.m., no anthem, no pre-game festivities (those will be saved for before the regularly-scheduled game); the teams will simply take the field for the top of the seventh inning, where there will be one out and no one on base and the Pirates' Neil RamirezJordy Mercer at bat.

Neil Ramirez was pitching at the time and is expected to pick up where he left off.

Here's the Gameday link for the suspended game.

Both games today will be on CSN Chicago.

As of now, I expect the regularly-scheduled game will likely start somewhat later than the scheduled 3:05 p.m. CT starting time. Thus I will be adjusting the posting times of the usual First Pitch Thread and Overflow Threads for that game after we find out exactly when the regular game will start. I'll tweet out the times for those threads at that time. Until then, use this thread for comments. As usual (see below), all these threads will post as part of one StoryStream on the front page.

Here's an article I posted a couple of weeks ago about the history of previous suspended games at Wrigley Field between 1969 and 1987. This is the first time there have been two suspended games at Wrigley in one year since 1987.

Here are the lineups as they currently stand for the suspended game.

Alcantara 2B, Baez SS, Valbuena 3B, Soler RF, Coghlan LF, Valaika 1B, Ramirez P, Baker C, Szczur CF

Harrison 3B, Mercer SS, McCutchen CF, Martin C, Marte LF, Davis 1B, Walker 2B, Tabata RF, Hughes P

Here's the info for Saturday's regularly-scheduled game. At the time I wrote this post, no lineups were available for the regular game. I'll tweet them from the BCB Twitter feed when they're available. One more housekeeping note: I'll recap both of these games after the regular game is over.

vs. Cubs

Felix Doubront, who pitched reasonably well in his first Cubs start, is getting another outing, once again against an N.L. Central contender. Doubront has never faced the Pirates and current Pirates are a small-sample-size 4-for-26 against him, about half of which is Russell Martin (2-for-10, one home run).

Francisco Liriano has had a rough year. His FIP is up almost a full run from his good 2013 (2.92 to 3.81), and so is his ERA (3.02 to 3.91). He's made two starts this year against the Cubs, and he had to leave the second one, June 10 in Pittsburgh, with an oblique injury that kept him out a month. He's actually improved some since his return (3.05 ERA, 1.186 WHIP). With Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo out, only a handful of active Cubs players have ever faced Liriano. Maybe that'll be an advantage.

Today's regularly-scheduled game, as noted above, is on CSN Chicago (as is the completion of the suspended game).

SB Nation game preview for Saturday's game

Please visit our SB Nation Pirates site Bucs Dugout.

For 2014, we are going to have the same game-thread routine as 2013. Here's how it works.

You'll find the game preview -- like this one -- posting as the first link in the StoryStream™, which will then contain all the overflow threads and the recap. The recap will also be on the front page as a separate post; once I post a game recap, the stream for each game will be retitled "Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads" so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

In general, game previews will post two hours before game time. Exception: for day games after night games, that will usually be 90 minutes.

You will also be able to find the First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in this StoryStream™. As I've done for each regular-season game for several years now, we'll have the First Pitch thread at five minutes before game time (moved up from actual game time per your requests), then an overflow one hour, two hours and 2:45 after game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
