Cubs Heroes and Goats: Games 141-143

Everything you wanted to know -- or didn't -- about the podium positions for the sweep at the hands of the Pirates.

Where have you gone, 2012 and 2013 Travis Wood?
Where have you gone, 2012 and 2013 Travis Wood?
Jeffrey Phelps

Well, that wasn't a 2-1 series win like I thought it would be.  I guess I should go back to my 1-2 default; it seems like it provides better results.

A quick recap of the Friday and Saturday (or Saturday and Saturday, to be more correct) games:

Game 141 (Friday  / Saturday - Pirates 5, Cubs 3, 11 innings):
Superhero -
Chris Valaika (.395). The 3-for-5 day was good on its own, and then that was compounded by the stolen base and the errors.
Billy Goat - Wesley Wright (-.429). Pretty much a no-brainer.

Game 142 (Saturday - Pirates 5, Cubs 0):
Superhero -
Ryan Kalish (.017). Yup, it was one of those games again.
Billy Goat - Arismendy Alcantara (-.111). His fifth straight appearance on the Goat podium, and he wasn't done yet.

And as for Sunday:

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Mike Olt (.030). Believe it or not: That was his first three-hit game in his career.
  • Hero - Matt Szczur (.015). After two goat podiums with a total WPA of -.005, this seems like a fitting thing to happen.
  • Sidekick - Eric Jokisch (.008). Probably deserves a higher podium spot, but not much you can do when the game's already out of hand by the time you get in there.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Travis Wood (-.408). Ouch.
  • Goat / Kid #1 (tie) - Luis Valbuena (-.029). Even in a blowout, leaving runners in scoring position will tend to get you a podium spot.
  • Goat / Kid #2 (tie) - Arismendy Alcantara (-.029). See Valbuena, Luis.

UPDATED RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 143 (Changes in Bold, Notations Below):

x - Player not on active roster.
y - Player not on 40-man roster.
z - Player no longer with Cubs.

Not many changes at the top of the plus/minus chart, but the bottom definitely got a bit heavier after the weekend.
