BCB's Danny Rockett has a new rough mix for the Cubs Victory Song contest! And it's ready for your voices!

Before I share the unfinished version of a possible alternative for the Cubs victory song "Go Cubs Go", it's necessary to point out that I feel it is impossible to replace an organically grown tradition like our celebratory anthem. Asking Cubs fans to sing a new song after a Cubs "W" is like asking people not to sing "Auld Lang Syne" on New Year's Eve. What are they gonna do? Pass out lyric sheets and email us all karaoke tracks to practice with?!  It ain't gonna happen!

However, the Chicago Tribune's contest for a "Go Cubs Go" replacement is a great way to inspire artists and musicians to create the next "Go Cubs Go." Not something to replace it, but to add to the Cubs song canon. Another amazing Cubs song like  "All The Way" by Eddie Vedder, or even "Hey Hey, Holy Mackerel!" could be being written right now. Even though there doesn't seem to be a prize for the winner, hundreds of Cubs fans will be inspired to create a love song to the Cubs. That can only be a good thing,

As far as crowdsourcing this song, I've gotten some amazing lyric suggestions and photos from BCB readers.

Plus, some fun Cubs fan stories to go with the pics. Chris Greer sent me this story:

I won a couple of spots in a Priceless contest in 2012 for tickets (vs. Phillies), batting/fielding practice and United Club dinner and took one of my stepsons who was turning 10 that month. I digitally painted my landlord-Cardinal-fan-neighbor's house in Cubbie blue with the logo to win the spots and have been winning ever since due to the fact that I get to post the pics to his FB timeline every so often! Even though we've moved a few blocks away I'm still thinking about planting ivy and painting some yellow numbers on his wall...

Or Greg Swallow, who lived in a Wrigley rooftop across the street.

The story...In the 90s I lived in the George Loukas rooftop building on Sheffield, one the Cubs just bought from him, with a couple college buddies. Our apartment had a private balcony so naturally we put a great sound system out there to play tunes before/during/after games. One of our staples was Go Cubs Go. We only played it after a win and loud enough that everyone in the RF bleachers or on Sheffield could hear. We'd never heard the Cubs play it in the stadium.  Certainly not after wins like they do now. Years later they started doing it. So we're convinced they heard us and thought it was a great idea! So we take credit for that tradition. Or at least that's our story and we're sticking with it.

Or Tom, who from his photographs seems like maybe the best guy ever to have a beer with. (You'll see him in the unfinished video.)

I've also received great lyric suggestions from Lucas Shaffer and Sue Draper and on the comments feed in the original post about this contest.

As of now, the original song is cut down by a minute and change. There are now lyrics that celebrate a Cubs victory (posted below the video), and I'm ready for your voices!

Record yourself chanting the "Let's Go Cubs" part and don't forget the final "Let's Go!!!!!" at the end.

If you can sing, add yourself to the chorus. Feel free to harmonize!

I'm recording my nieces and sister tomorrow. Add your voices too!

Or... email me pics of you and your friends and family at Wrigley so I can finish the video! If you participate, I promise not to include a single picture of myself!

The deadline to get materials to me is next Wednesday, January 28. Cool?

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Thanks guys! It's great connecting with so many of you through our beloved team!

What a beautiful day for a ball game

The Cubs are on their way.

Now the game is through, we’ll raise the "W"

Cause the Cubbies won today

Raise your voice, stand up and cheer

Cause this is gonna be our year!

Holy Cow! Hey Hey!

We’re going all the way!

We’re cheerin’ on our Cubbies, yeah we came to play

We’re gonna clap our hands

We’re gonna shake the stands,

Chicago Cubs and the world's greatest fans

Let’s Go Cubs!

Raise your voice, stand up and cheer

Cause this is gonna be our year!

Holy Cow! Hey Hey!

We’re going all the way!

We’re cheerin’ on our Cubbies, yeah we came to play

We’re gonna clap our hands

We’re gonna shake the stands,

Chicago Cubs and the world's greatest fans

Let’s Go Cubs!
