Lefthanded pitcher Mike Kickham has been a Cub for 17 days -- probably not even enough time to get fitted for a spring-training jersey.
And, now he's off the 40-man roster, according to a press release issued Friday afternoon by the team.
Kickham might still have some use to the team, as he's a lefthanded arm who might be able to transition from starting to being a LOOGY. I imagine the Cubs are going to try to get him to clear waivers so they can assign him to Triple-A Iowa. If they do that, he'll almost certainly get a non-roster invitation to spring training.
Meanwhile, the Chris Denorfia signing had been posted via Twitter and various other sources on New Year's Eve, 10 days ago. It was reported at the time that he had signed for $2.6 million. With these moves, the Cubs' 40-man roster remains full at 40, but I imagine there will be more moves coming, particularly some sort of deal involving Welington Castillo.
There was another roster move of some interest to the Cubs -- the Orioles DFA'd Ryan Lavarnway today. Lavarnway was a Cub for four days last month before being waived. If Theo & Jed want to get him back for Triple-A depth at catcher, they might now be able to do that.
As always, we await further developments.
