Friday is the deadline for players to be placed on the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. The Cubs have not yet announced who they're placing on the roster, but they did make a minor deal Friday afternoon:

Spencer Patton is a native of downstate Urbana who played his college ball at SIU-Edwardsville. He hasn't had much success in the major leagues: 6.75 ERA in 36 relief appearances over the last two seasons. He had good numbers in the minor leagues, though, including at Triple-A Round Rock this year: 1.67 ERA, 1.111 WHIP in 26 relief appearances covering 27 innings, with only nine walks and one home run allowed.
