The Cubs today announced that 19 players would receive non-roster invitations to spring training. These are players not on the 40-man roster who will nonetheless at least start spring training training with the big leaguers.
PITCHERS (9): Daniel Bard, Corey Black, Francisley Bueno, Anthony Carter, Jorge DeLeon, Hunter Cervenka, Pierce Johnson, Armando Rivero, Donn Roach
CATCHERS (2): Kyle Schwarber, Taylor Teagarden
INFIELDERS (5): Kris Bryant, Jonathan Herrera, Addison Russell, Chris Valaika, Logan Watkins
OUTFIELDERS (3): Albert Almora, Mike Baxter, Adron Chambers
Logan Watkins tore his achilles tendon on Wednesday and is likely out for the season. But he was listed by the Cubs as still having an NRI.
There are not many surprises on the list, other than perhaps only two catchers getting an invite and one of them is Schwarber, who is still learning the position. Other than that, it's mostly recent high-round draft picks that the major league staff wants to get a look at and journeymen who have a chance to make the major league team if a spot opens up in spring training due to an injury or trade.
The big attraction for fans attending spring training will be the top prospects, of course, and how they do against major league competition will be closely watched this spring.
This is just another sign that spring training is just around the corner. Play ball!
