Cubs Option Javier Baez To Iowa, Reassign Kris Bryant, Addison Russell To Minor-League Camp

The latter two moves are not surprises. The first one might be.

The Cubs have made three important roster moves today:

For those of you who thought Javier Baez would be going north with the team, the Cubs have decided to go in a different direction and get him some more experience at Triple-A Iowa. This likely means second base will be shared by Tommy La Stella and Arismendy Alcantara, in some form yet to be determined.

There should be no surprise about the reassignment to minor-league camp for Kris Bryant and Addison Russell. "Reassignment" is used, incidentally, for players not on the 40-man roster. We all know the reasons Bryant is being sent down, even if they're not being spoken. Russell has just three games' experience at the Triple-A level and management clearly wants him to play a full year there.

This doesn't mean those three won't play some further big-league spring games, but to start the season, they're all likely headed to Des Moines (or, more correctly, Memphis, where the I-Cubs open their season.)
