Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 8

In another neck-and-neck race for the top of the Hero podium, Travis Wood squeaks out the top step by a nose.

And for the first time this season, there will be a bumping up of players on a podium as Travis Wood would have taken the top spot on the Goat podium as well for his hitting performance (-.047). However, as I mentioned before the season started, pitchers this season will only be judged on their pitching performance and not their hitting.

It did lead to an interesting and tough-luck bottom step on the Goat podium, though.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Travis Wood (.165). Superb performance through seven innings before he ran out of steam.
  • Hero - Anthony Rizzo (.163). Wind blowing in? Rizzo scoffs at your wind blowing in. Scoffs, I tell you.
  • Sidekick - Jonathan Herrera (.079). Hit one off of his shoelaces to score Starlin Castro in the second.

THE THREE GOATS: With Travis Wood's -.047 hitting off of the board, everyone else gets a bump up:

  • Billy Goat - Miguel Montero (-.024). Done in by the grounder with the bases loaded to end the second.
  • Goat - Chris Coghlan (-.019). Okay, let me make this clear: I do not hate Chris Coghlan. He seems like a really nice guy. But the fact that he got caught stealing is not my fault. The WPA gods are just not shining down on him right now.  And then there's...
  • Kid - Neil Ramirez (-.006). In all seriousness, I hope he's okay and that medical reports in the morning will say that he's fine. But you want to talk about tough luck: the guy didn't even throw the fourth ball to Joey Votto and he ends up on the final step of the podium. Brian Schlitter owes him something for this. Maybe an "I'm sorry I threw ball four to the guy you three the first three balls to" card or something. I'm sure Hallmark has a Hoops and Yo-Yo card for that.
