If you were wondering who the final roster cuts and DL moves would be, here's the scoop:
Sweeney DFA. #Cubs select Herrera for Opening Day roster
— Carrie Muskat (@CarrieMuskat) April 5, 2015
4 #Cubs on DL: Wada, Denorfia, Turner, Beeler
— Carrie Muskat (@CarrieMuskat) April 5, 2015
So, that leaves the following as the 25-man roster beginning with tonight's game against the Cardinals.
Pitchers (12): Jon Lester, Jake Arrieta, Jason Hammel, Kyle Hendricks, Travis Wood, Edwin Jackson, Phil Coke, Pedro Strop, Jason Motte, Justin Grimm, Neil Ramirez, Hector Rondon
Catchers (3): David Ross, Welington Castillo, Miguel Montero
Infielders (6): Arismendy Alcantara, Tommy La Stella, Starlin Castro, Jonathan Herrera, Mike Olt, Anthony Rizzo
Outfielders (4): Chris Coghlan, Dexter Fowler, Matt Szczur, Jorge Soler
Of the 25 players listed above, 15 of them were not on the Opening Day roster a year ago, and of those 15, eight weren't even in the Cubs organization last year. That's a tremendous roster turnover in just one year -- all for the better, I'd say.
Obviously, changes will be coming when Kris Bryant arrives, and I can't see the Cubs carrying three catchers for long. But for now, those are your Chicago Cubs for 2015.
Play ball!
