Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 11

Only two games played and the Cubs' system dropped them both.

Pelicans Mark Zagunis, Duane Underwood Jr. and Jonathan Martinez were all named to the Carolina League All-Star team.

Iowa Cubs

Rained out. Double-header tomorrow.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were burned by the Jacksonville Suns (Marlins), 5-2.

Pierce Johnson made his season debut tonight with a three-inning scoreless start. Johnson allowed three hits. He walked one and struck out two. He threw 54 pitches before exiting, 32 for strikes.

Michael Wagner and Gerardo Concepcion teamed up to surrender three runs to the Suns in the bottom of the 8th. Wagner was charged with the loss. He pitched 2.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He struck out three and walked no one.

Shortstop Elliot Soto was 2 for 3 with a walk and a successful safety squeeze in the 7th inning, scoring Jacob Hannemann. Hannemann was 2 for 4.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were puzzled by the Frederick Keys (Orioles), 7-4.

Paul Blackburn had a rough start. He gave up six runs on six hits over five innings. One of the six runs was unearned. Blackburn struck out two and walked one while collecting his third loss this year.

Right fielder Mark Zagunis had a pair of doubles in a 2 for 5 game. He scored one run.

Third baseman Chesny Young went 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. Catcher Victor Caratini was 2 for 5 and he scored once.

South Bend Cubs

Rained out in Burlington as the rains hit the state of Iowa. (Coming to Chicago tomorrow?)
