Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 58

New, 7 comments

Miguel Montero got the scoring started early and earned the top spot on the Hero podium after a long break from it.

As Len and JD said, three-run homers are good.

Fun Fact: The last game the Cubs won and the starting pitcher lasted three innings or fewer actually wasn't that long ago; it last happened on September 20, 2014 when Felix Doubront didn't make it out of the third inning in an 8-7 win over the Dodgers. The feat has only been managed eight times by the Cubs since the start of the 2010 season.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Miguel Montero (.220). It took him 23 games, but he finally made it back to the top of the podium. And not the Goat podium.
  • Hero - Travis Wood (.146). It's hard to believe that he's only appeared on one of the top two steps twice this season, including last night's performance.
  • Sidekick - Kris Bryant (.119). Only had one hit, but it helped re-open the lead a bit in the fifth.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Tsuyoshi Wada (-.152). These three-inning starts aren't going to cut it in the long run.
  • Goat - Starlin Castro (-.077). The whiff with the bases loaded in the fifth took him a long way to the second spot on the podium.
  • Kid - Junior Lake (-.054). Also was hitless on the night, but he did have a walk.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 58 ("x" indicates player not on active roster):

Bryant inches ahead in his second-place spot on the plus/minus chart, while Castro falls into a tie for the cellar.
