The Cubs top prospect, catcher Kyle Schwarber, will join the major league team and make his debut on Tuesday. His teammate with the Tennessee Smokies broke the news on Twitter tonight.
Congrats to my bash brother @kschwarb12 on the call to the show. Gonna miss my boy but couldn't be more happy for a better dude. Go ball out
Jesse Rogers has more details.
@kschwarb12 to be with the Cubs from Tues-Sunday to DH, bat off the bench, be a 3rd catcher and get a taste of big leagues. Then to AAA
So Schwarber's call is a temporary one to serve as the team's DH in the series in Cleveland and Minnesota. In any case, he's done with the Smokies and when he gets sent back down, it will be to Triple-A Iowa.
In Tennessee this season, Schwarber is hitting .320 with 13 home runs and 39 RBI in 57 games. His on-base percentage is an eye-popping .436 as Southern League pitchers have learned to stay away.
Even though this is planned to be just a temporary addition, it's yet another exciting young player joining the Cubs this season. And while the plan is for Schwarber to go down to Iowa next week, it wouldn't be a surprise if he didn't rejoin the Cubs later this season and before September.
