Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 63

Kyle Schwarber begins his five-game designated-hitter tour in fine fashion with four hits, propelling him to the top of the Hero podium in his first major-league start.

Honorable mention for the Hero podium goes to Tsuyoshi Wada, whose seven innings of four-hit ball landed him fourth on the WPA list on Wednesday night, primarily because nothing after the third inning mattered anymore. Also to Yoervis Medina for his first relief appearance as a Cub in which he pitched two innings and didn't walk anybody.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Kyle Schwarber (.173). It wasn't a majestic triple, but hey, three bases is three bases.
  • Hero - Addison Russell (.142). His homer in the second was all that he needed for the second step.
  • Sidekick - Chris Denorfia (.083). Doubled in the second, and added the three-run bomb in the third just for good measure.

THE THREE GOATS: Or more appropriately for Wednesday, the three guys who didn't get a hit before it became a 6-0 game:

  • Billy Goat - Starlin Castro (-.028). Singled in the third, but it was too late to make much difference.
  • Goat - David Ross (-.025). Also singled in the third, and it was definitely too late to make any difference.
  • Kid - Kris Bryant (-.012). In my best Chris Farley: "Remember that time, uh, when you were playing Cleveland, and you were up by 13 runs, and it was the ninth inning, and, uh, the bases were loaded, and they had that outfielder (David Murphy) pitching, and he threw you a batting practice fastball, and you crushed the snot out of it, and it landed somewhere in Lake Erie?

    ...That was awesome."
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 63 ("x" indicates player not on active roster):

Addison Russell climbs into third place on the plus/minus chart, while Castro finds himself once again just outside of the cellar door.
