Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 18

The Emeralds get underway tonight and it could have gone better. Iowa won, South Bend lost and it rained.

Keith Cooper/South Bend Cubs

Two Cubs minor league right-handed pitchers, Assael Aquino and Luiz Escanio, have both been given 72-game suspensions after testing positive for Stanozolol. Both are on the roster of the Cubs team in the Dominican Summer League.

I've never heard of either one of them, either.

A big welcome to the Eugene Emeralds, the Cubs new short-season A affiliate!

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs slowed the Round Rock Express (Rangers) to a crawl, 7-2.

Starter Carlos Pimentel improved his record to 5-4 after pitching 6.1 innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits. Pimentel walked four and struck out four.

Third baseman Christian Villanueva was 2 for 4 with a double and a sac fly. He had two total RBI and he scored once.

Catcher Rafael Lopez was 3 for 5 with a run scored. Center fielder John Andreoli was 2 for 5 with one run scored and one RBI.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies national TV broadcast got suspended by rain in the fourth inning with the Smokies leading 1-0.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Pelicans were also rained out. They'll play a doubleheader on Saturday. The Salem Red Sox won, so the Pelicans magic number stays at two.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs fell to the Dayton Dragons (Reds), 2-1 in ten innings.

The Cubs wasted the best start of Jake Stinnett's professional career. Stinnett went six innings and allowed just one unearned run on only one hit. Stinnett walked three and struck out four.

Through nine innings, the Cubs held the Dragons to only one hit. David Garner pitched two innings of relief of Stinnett without allowing a hit. And James Farris pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out two. But then Farris pitched the tenth inning and gave up a run on three hits to take the loss.

Left fielder Charcer Burks was 2 for 5 with two doubles and the lone South Bend RBI.

FIrst baseman Yasiel Balaguert and catcher Cael Brockmeyer were both 3 for 5.

DH Gioskar Amaya was 2 for 2, but exited after beating out an infield hit with a leg injury. It looked like a hamstring.

Eugene Emerals

The Eugene Emeralds were drenched by the Everett AquaSox (Mariners), 6-1.

Starter Carson Sands went five innings and allowed three runs on just three hits. Two of the runs were unearned. Sands struck out two and walked no one.

The Emeralds had three hits tonight. The Emeralds committed five errors tonight. Not a recipe for success.

Right fielder Eloy Jimenez had two of the three Ems hits. He was 2 for 4 and had the lone RBI.
