Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 65

There's not much surprise as to who took the top of the Goat podium on Friday night. Actually, there's no surprise at all.

One man, alone with only his thoughts.
One man, alone with only his thoughts.
Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

As for the Hero podium, there were only three Cubs above a zero WPA on Friday night. And for one of them it's been way too long.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Anthony Rizzo (.062). Okay, I really should clarify things a bit more. When I said that I wanted Rizzo to go back to doing his magic on the Hero podium, I didn't mean that everyone else on the team should fall asleep while he does it. I mean, give the guy a run for the money.
  • Hero - Miguel Montero (.015). Had the third of the Cubs' four hits and got it in his first at-bat.
  • Sidekick - Edwin Jackson (.012). Things you don't want to hear 65 games into the season, especially with a player making $11 million a year: This is his first Hero podium appearance of 2015.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Kyle Hendricks (-.264). Yeah, that was an ugly night.
  • Goat - Chris Coghlan (-.064). Had the bad luck of striking out when the Cubs actually managed to have a runner on base as well as making the first out of the inning twice in his other two at-bats.
  • Kid - Dexter Fowler (-.051). One of two 0-for-4 performances on the night including a double play to render Rizzo's homer in the bottom of the ninth statistically irrelevant.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 65 ("x" indicates player not on active roster):

Rizzo finds his way back to a 20-point lead on the plus/minus chart, while Coghlan cuts in front of Starlin Castro for the spot in front of the cellar door.
