New, 6 comments

The Cubs finish their series against the Nationals on an excellent note with Kris Bryant taking the top of the Hero podium on Sunday.

Here's the quick recap from the Cubs' win on Saturday:

  • Superhero - Jason Hammel (.302). His third eight-inning start this season. By comparison, he had one in the 2014 season.
  • Billy Goat - Junior Lake (-.157). 0-for-4 day with a double play to boot.

And as for Sunday's win:

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Kris Bryant (.175). All he needed for the cycle was the homer. It could have even been a "deluxe" cycle (I made that up) since he had a walk as well.
  • Hero - Anthony Rizzo (.112). Getting back into that habit of taking the second step on the podium again. He was also there in Saturday's win.
  • Sidekick - Chris Coghlan (.109). Gave the Cubs the lead with his two-run single in the fifth.

THE THREE GOATS:

After a 15-game break, there was another pitcher bump from the Goat podium as Kyle Hendricks' -.093 hitting was moved out.  The bump is the 14th of the season, all from the Goat podium. The updated point tallies from the pitchers: Jake Arrieta -9, Jon Lester -7, Travis Wood -7, Kyle Hendricks -5, Jason Hammel -2.

  • Billy Goat - Kyle Hendricks (-.116). The pitching performance still earns him the top of the podium, however.
  • Goat - Miguel Montero (-.024). The only position player in the starting lineup to not record a hit on Sunday.
  • Kid - Dexter Fowler (-.008). It's a tough-luck podium spot for Fowler, whose 1-for-5 day just happened to come when the offense was on a tear.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 55 ("x" indicates player not on active roster):

Not much change at the top of the chart, with Rizzo piling on more points and Hammel moving up to third to lead all of the starting pitchers.
