Iowa Cubs Wrap: June 8

Only one game tonight. Four were scheduled.

David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports

The rain gods were kind to me today, as I've been working pretty solidly since I woke up this morning on the draft. It's always a hassle on draft day to then go write up all the minor league games.

Congratulations to Christian Villanueva, who was named PCL Player of the Week.

So here we go.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs made the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals) blue, 2-1.

Dallas Beeler made what was easily his best start of the year. Beeler allowed no runs and only one hit over six innings. The only baserunner Beeler allowed was a one-out single in the fifth inning. He struck out eight.

Drake Britton pitched two innings and blew the 1-0 lead when he gave up a run in the seventh inning. But he got the win when Iowa scored again in the eighth.  Britton allowed one run on three hits and a walk. He did not strike anyone out.

Brian Schlitter didn't make it easy when he walked two batters in the top of the ninth after two were out, but he got a fly to right field to end the game and collect his fourth save. Schlitter pitched just the one inning and only allowed those two walks. He had just the one strikeout.

Pinch-hitter Rafael Lopez singled home right fielder Rubi Silva with what turned out to be the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Silva was 1 for 3.

Iowa's only other run came when second baseman Arismendy Alcantara doubled to lead off the bottom of the eighth and scored three batters later on an error. Alcantara was 1 for 4.

Iowa had four hits tonight and still won.
