Day one is in the books and the Cubs have two new members of the family. In addition to OF/2B Ian Happ from Cincinnati, the Cubs took OF Donnie Dewees from the University of North Florida in the 2nd round. Dewees is a left-handed hitter with strong contact skills. He led the NCAA with 96 hits this past season and posted a .422 batting average and a .483 OBP with 18 home runs and 23 steals. Above all, he walked almost twice as often as he struck out. Those are impressive numbers, although it should be mentioned that he put them up in a hitter's park against weak competition. Most scouts think he's destined for left field, although he's displayed better speed this year and some think he can play center field on the major league level. Like Happ, Dewees has also excelled in the Cap Cod Summer League.
Here's some video of Dewees:
Moving on to today, rounds 3 through 10 are picked today. There's no TV broadcast like there are for the first two rounds, but there is a web broadcast on mlb.com and you can follow along with the draft tracker as well.
Discuss the picks amongst yourself. Or yourselves, hopefully.
