Cubs Designate Clayton Richard For Assignment, Recall Yoervis Medina

Clayton, we hardly knew ye.

The Cubs gave Clayton Richard a chance to resurrect his major-league career, but now they are saying goodbye to him:

Mark Gonzales is correct, the Cubs need another bullpen arm not only with the doubleheader, but because Tuesday night's game went into long extra innings. Medina will help -- he made three appearances covering five innings for the Cubs earlier this season without allowing a run, with three strikeouts and no walks.

Richard made three appearances (two starts) for the Cubs, with mediocre results: 15 innings, 19 hits, five walks, six strikeouts, nine earned runs, 5.40 ERA. He did take the ball when the Cubs needed someone, and I give him credit for resurrecting a career that appeared over due to several shoulder issues. I wish him the best going forward.

The Cubs will next need to fill Richard's rotation spot next Tuesday, July 28, presuming they keep on rotation with Jon Lester Friday, Jake Arrieta Saturday, Jason Hammel Sunday and Kyle Hendricks Monday. It's possible Tsuyoshi Wada will be ready to return by then, or perhaps the Cubs will make a deal for a starter by then. Stay tuned.
