Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 77

New, 6 comments

It's a series sweep of the Superhero award for the starting rotation as Jake Arrieta follows in the footsteps of Kyle Hendricks and Jon Lester with another solid start.

He didn't want to be left out after what Kyle and Jon did the past two games.

The win on Thursday did lead to another first for the season. With a bit of an asterisk, but still a first. More on that below.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Jake Arrieta (.242). It's a very nice sign when a pitcher puts up a game score of 75 and it's already the fourth time this season that he's done it.
  • Hero - Jonathan Herrera (.210). He might deserve the honorary Superhero award for his first homer in almost two years.
  • Sidekick - Anthony Rizzo (.096). Because he doesn't have enough points yet, obviously.

THE THREE GOATS:

For the second time in three games and for the 16th time this season, there's a bump on the Goat podium as Arrieta's -.055 hitting is moved out. For those scoring along at home, here are the updated hitting point totals for the pitchers: Donn Roach +3, Jason Hammel -2, Kyle Hendricks -7, Jon Lester -7, Travis Wood -7, Jake Arrieta -11.

  • Billy Goat - Mike Baxter (-.073). Probably not the kind of homecoming he was looking for.
  • Goat - Addison Russell (-.053). It's a bit lonely being the only guy (other than the guy who got moved out) to not get a hit or a walk.
  • Kid - Travis Wood (+.005). Yes, folks, in karma's attempt to even out the scales, we have the first anti-Goat of the season. The asterisk is because of Arrieta's bump to move Wood here, but that's how the game is played. And for those wondering about last season, there were two anti-Goats as Wesley Wright and Blake Parker each took the final stair once last season with a +.002 WPA.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 77 ("x" indicates player not on active roster):

Arrieta moves into a tie for second place on the plus/minus chart, an impressive feat given that he only gets one chance every five days to make a move.
