I certainly hope those of you on the East Coast (who are normally my first readers in the morning) got through the weekend all right. We're just getting lots of much-needed rain out in California.
- I'm guessing you heard about this already, but Yoenis Cespedes re-signed with the Mets on a three-year $75 million deal with an opt-out after one season.
- Mets fan Jerry Seinfeld was very happy. It's a festivus miracle!
- Erik Malinowski says Seinfeld isn't the only Mets fan who should be happy.
- Jay Jaffe thinks the Mets made a great deal that will make them a title contender in 2016.
- Joe Delessio points out that the Mets recent history of signing free agents hasn't been a good one, although he thinks Cespedes will break that streak.
- Mark Townsend writes that the Angels and Nationals are the big losers with Cespedes signing with the Mets. One would figure that Dexter Fowler would be the big winner here as the next best available option.
- Jeff Sullivan is mostly bullish about Cespedes playing center field full-time in Citi Field this summer.
- Mike Axisa looks at the outfielder trade market after Cespedes signing.
- Phil Rogers looks at the trade market for Jonathan Lucroy.
- The Diamondbacks are trying to trade Aaron Hill, but they're not really finding any takers right now.
- In his Sunday notes column, Nick Cafardo lists teams that helped themselves this offseason and those that did not.
- Jon Paul Morosi says you can't buy chemistry like the Royals have. Yeah, sure you can. I know a guy who will sell you some. (Can't anyone admit the Royals won the World Series because they are actually good and not because they are somehow morally superior to every other team because they play in a small market?)
- In case you need proof that you can buy the Royals chemistry, Max Rieper wonders if cryotherapy isn't the secret to keeping the Royals healthy. Mostly just the way Salvador Perez puts on a tiara and sings "Let It Go" after undergoing the treatment.
- The Red Sox will retire Wade Boggs number. Once again, the Red Sox finish behind the Rays.
- Red Sox owner John Henry said that it would be a "big disaster" if Boston did not make the playoffs this year, in David Ortiz's final season.
- Yu Darvish has been cleared by MLB of any wrongdoing in his brother's gambling operation.
- Charlie Blackmon was "perplexed" by the Rockies signing of Gerardo Parra.
- Paul Swydan has a solution to the Rockies outfield logjam: move Corey Dickerson to first base.
- ESPN.com continues their "re-imagining baseball" series with Tim Kurkjian saying that daily infield practice before games should be "mandatory." Huh? At least Kurkjian writes that this will never happen, but even batting practice isn't "mandatory."
- And Jim Caple doesn't want replay technology to go "too far." Man, this series started out pretty strong and then they buried the weak stuff over the weekend.
- Baseball Prospectus unveiled a new method for evaluating catchers. It should put to rest any non-steroid arguments against Mike Piazza's enshrinement, at least.
- Jared Diamond argues that a universal DH is inevitable. It better not happen until after Bartolo Colon retires, gosh darn it.
- Rob Neyer thinks that there are valid reasons for the NL to adopt the DH, but the idea that the rules in both leagues need to be "uniform" is not one of them.
- Was the password the Cardinals hacked from the Astros some variant of David Eckstein's name? No wonder he got three votes for Cooperstown. The voting was hacked.
- Adam Wainwright called into a talk radio show to complain that he lasted until the 7th round in a fantasy baseball draft.
- An update on the "escalating war" over TV rights between the Nationals and Orioles. At this point, the Orioles are refusing to participate in any arbitration.
- Airing tomorrow night on the MLB Network: a documentary narrated by William Shatner on the Montreal Expos. They tried to get Youppi to narrate it, but that didn't go well.
- You've probably never heard of Lou Criger, but he was a Boston catcher who refused to take a payoff to throw the 1903 World Series. A poster from 1930 honoring him is up for auction.
- Ah, that Dan Haren. Now retired, he took in a Jennifer Lopez concert in Las Vegas with former teammate Jered Weaver. He posted a video of Weaver grooving to the music. Weaver doesn't look too happy when he realizes he's being filmed.
- And finally, Mike Trout is a real weather nerd. In fact, he loves tracking the weather so much that he called in to the Weather Channel to give an update on the blizzard conditions in South Jersey.
And tomorrow will be a better day than today, Buster.
