Cubs Heroes and Goats: NLDS Game 3

New, 24 comments

A lead that had been slowly slipping away over the course of the game finally gave way in the eighth, with Aroldis Chapman's two hits allowed pushing him to the top of the Goats in the Cubs' 6-5 loss.

That has to be a lonely feeling.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Gonzalez Mishap of NLDS Game 3: With two on and one out in the bottom of the eighth, Conor Gillaspie provides yet another heroic playoff moment as he belts a triple into the deep gap in right-center field, just out of the reach of the glove of Albert Almora Jr. to put the Giants ahead 4-3. WPA impact: +.551.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Kris Bryant (.386). The ultimate game of inches on his homer in the ninth: had he hit it even a few inches further to the left, who knows what kind of deflection it would have taken off of the car sign out there.
  • Hero - Jake Arrieta (.105 / .354). Hey, look! It's another huge homer and three more clutch runs driven in by the pitching staff! On the pitching side of the ledger, he faced baserunners in every inning except the sixth and final one that he pitched, although in three of the other five innings the baserunner came via a two-out single or walk.
  • Sidekick - Mike Montgomery (.078). Gave it everything that he had before the Giants' bats finally caught up to him in his fifth inning of work. Of course, he did have some help from a spectacular game-saving diving catch by Almora Jr. in the bottom of the ninth.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Aroldis Chapman (-.458). Not much you can say about Gillaspie's triple in the eighth. Other than Thud.
  • Goat - David Ross (-.199). Oh, the cruelest of visits from the double play overlords as they claim Ross with a 6-4-3 to end the 13th with two on.
  • Kid - Anthony Rizzo (-.183). Still searching for that first hit of the postseason as he went 0-for-6 in this one and now stands at 0-for-13 in the series.
