Cubs Heroes and Goats: NLDS Game 4

OH. MY. GOODNESS.

John Hefti-USA TODAY Sports

In the interest of full disclosure: Josh wasn't the only person who was preparing for a completely different write-up before the game was actually over. Around the top of the ninth inning, I was doing the same thing with this piece, just trying to get all of the framework taken care of and working on filling in the podium spots based on how things looked at the time, which was nobody out and Kris Bryant on first. And with each subsequent batter, the podium kept changing while my heart rate slowly increased. Somewhere around the bottom of the cliff on the chart below I was in a combination of full frenzy and "please get the final three outs without incident please please please" mode. As Josh said in his recap, I've never been happier to completely re-write a piece.

What a game. What a series. Hats definitely go off to the San Francisco Giants for playing what has been the most memorable four-game stretch that I can recall in my lifetime.

One series down. Hopefully two more to go.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Ramirez Catalyst of NLDS Game 4: With one out and a runner on second in the top of the ninth, Javier Baez sends a single back up the middle to score Jason Heyward and give the Cubs a 6-5 lead. WPA impact: +.299.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Javier Baez (.365). What a monster of a series he had: .375 average, .975 OPS, plays all over the infield, game-winning single in the Division Series... I don't know what else to say.
  • Hero - Willson Contreras (.237). In what I feel was probably the biggest plate appearance of his young career so far, he came through with a huge pinch-hit single back up the middle to tie the game at five.
  • Sidekick - Aroldis Chapman (.164). Three up, three down, three swinging strikeouts. Perfection.

THE THREE GOATS: Today listed without comment, because it's a day of celebration. And because I'm still completely flabbergasted by that ninth inning.

  • Billy Goat - John Lackey (-.223 / -.246).
  • Goat - Addison Russell (-.101).
  • Kid - Justin Grimm (-.083).
