Cubs Heroes and Goats: NLCS Game 6

New, 20 comments

In the words of Joe Buck: "Left side. Out! OUT!! THE CUBS HAVE WON THE PENNANT!!!"

And as I thought when I wrote On The Horizon, Wrigley Field was going bonkers.

This video will be in my collection for the rest of time. I'm pretty sure that the neighbors on both sides of me heard me yelling as the final out was made.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Ramirez Catalyst of NLCS Game 6: In what turns out to be the most pivotal play of the game from a WPA standpoint, Anthony Rizzo hits a fly ball to left-center field in the bottom of the first inning that appears to be a sure catch for Andrew Toles, but Toles appears to take his eyes off of the ball as it clanks off of the bottom of his glove for a two-base error, giving the Cubs two runners on with nobody out and a 1-0 lead. WPA impact: +.088.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Kyle Hendricks (.245 / .217). Absolutely no doubt whatsoever about this one. It was a masterpiece of a Game 6 for him; as the Fox Sports One crew commented during the game, it looked like he was just pitching in a regular night game in the middle of May.
  • Hero - Anthony Rizzo (.139). Even without the error from Toles in the bottom of the first it was a very good night for Rizzo, including his homer to right to extend the Cubs' lead to five in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Sidekick - Dexter Fowler (.116). As he has done so many times this season, he got the Cubs started off on the right foot with a leadoff doubleHis run-scoring single in the bottom of the second sealed the deal for the final podium spot.

THE THREE GOATS: For the first time ever, I'm going to completely deviate from the normal process. Namely, I'm not going to list the three Goats in this game. There were three Cubs that were at the bottom of the WPA chart in Game 6 and their stats will be included in the rankings, but I'm not going to worry about listing them here. I'm still way too giddy about the events of the game and I probably will be for quite some time. So for this game, let's celebrate everything that has been accomplished so far, while at the same time remembering one more important thing:

Four more to go.
