Cub Tracks’ Fodder Time

Awards, trophies, keepsakes, Rule 5, and other bullets

Sunday, Cub Tracks gave a Chalk Talk, put the icing on the cake, and went on a bender. In this episode, we look at possible Cubs awards, Dexter Fowler’s imminent departure, and the Rule 5 Draft.

It would be great to keep Dexter, but it looks less and less likely. BCB has a front-page article on that, so I needn’t dwell. At least one source has Dex as the second-best free agent out there. He’ll get a payday.

Good articles are kinda thin on the ground these days. The stove isn’t fully lit and the Cubs aren’t expected to be especially active. But you never know — relief pitching and center field are areas of concern, and there’s always that fifth rotation spot to consider.

There’s an awards ceremony tonight. That should provide some chinwag fodder. In the meantime, here are a few items for your consideration. As always * means autoplay on (directions to remove for Firefox and Chrome).

  • Carrie Muskat (MLB.com): Joe Maddon aims to equal managerial luminaries. Cubs skipper would tie Cox, La Russa if he wins fourth MOY Award.
  • Paul Sullivan (Chicago Tribune): Can Cubs' Joe Maddon make it back-to-back NL Manager of Year crowns? We’ll know tonight.
  • Carrie Muskat (MLB.com): David Ross reflects on Cubs' title, life in retirement. "It hits me at times," Ross said. "But for me, other than cleaning out my locker, there hasn't been a huge emotional day."
  • Jayson Stark (ESPN): And the nominees are: Your guide to MLB's awards week. Stark has two Cubs winning trophies.
  • Jesse Rogers (ESPN): From talk shows to awards: Cubs enjoying ride in the spotlight. "Everyone is interested in the group," Ross said. "I think we have a group that’s relatable to people. Great dudes."
  • Brett Taylor (Bleacher Nation): Lukewarm Stove: Ohtani, White Sox Rebuild, Chris Coghlan, Draft Pick Compensation Changes, More.
  • David Miniel (Cubbies Crib): Chicago Cubs need to add another southpaw to their rotation. Rich Hill? Derek Holland? Or Mike Montgomery?
  • Evan Altman (Cubs Insider): Life after Dex: A quick look at Cubs’ outfield situation. Dexter Fowler’s likely exit means more playing time for somebody. But who, and where?
  • Patrick Mooney (CSN Chicago*): Dexter Fowler betting on himself again after declining qualifying offer from Cubs. “You know what they say, they say: ‘You go, we go,’ so I’m going,” Fowler said at the Grant Park rally.
  • Todd Johnson (Cubs Insider): Cubs need to protect some more prospects from the Rule 5 draft by Friday. Can’t protect everybody, though. And some are suspects.
  • Tommy Meyers (Wrigleyville-Baseball Prospectus): Rule 5 Draft Preview: Who will the Cubs protect? Very different list than above.
  • Tim Huwe (The Zygote 50): Someone else’s view of the Rule 5 draft. Elaborating on Tommy Meyers’ article.
  • Neil (Chicago Cubs Online): Multiple predictions have Kenley Jansen landing with Cubs. Jim Duquette has him going to the Giants too. Send in the clones.
  • Ben Brotemarkel (Florida Today): Chicago Cubs and a central Florida connection. Part of the story of Joe Tinker.
  • NBC Chicago: Macy's Holiday window displays give shoutout to Chicago Cubs. A reason to believe.
  • Matt Veasey (Call to the Pen): Catching up with Mark Prior. Prior is now a pitching coordinator with the San Diego Padres.
  • Steve Hanlon (NWI.com): Schererville's Bob Polimac recalls fond days of youth as Cubs batboy. From 1954 through 1957, Polimac was a clubhouse assistant and part-time batboy for the Cubs.
