Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 6

In a race for the top spot that changed hands on several occasions, Miguel Montero takes the top spot with two long doubles in Sunday's finale at Arizona.

This could be the first game this season where the Cuyler award winner is different from the Superhero award winner.  Cases could be made for several players; the voting should be pretty interesting on this one.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Miguel Montero (.177). Put a couple of dents in the center-field wall with his long doubles, and his walk in the sixth was enough to push him past...
  • Hero - Jorge Soler (.148). ...who un-tied the game in the sixth with his homer to left, but he couldn't overcome the strikeout in the first with two on to keep the top podium spot.
  • Sidekick - Tommy La Stella (.124). A very nice day at the plate, recording three singles and making a nifty stop in the seventh to boot.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Addison Russell (-.111). Lots of opportunities with runners on and couldn't make anything of them.
  • Goat - Anthony Rizzo (-.080). Ended up getting the second spot due in large part to a borderline third-strike call on an inside pitch from Randall Delgado in the seventh.
  • Kid - Ben Zobrist (-.022). His first two plate appearances were good, but his last three with a total of five runners on base were his downfall.
RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 6: With Rizzo falling out of the top spot, the logjam of starting pitchers takes over the front of the pack while Russell falls to the bottom with his second straight Billy Goat.
