Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 7

Yeah... this one's pretty easy.

And the crowd goes wild!!!
And the crowd goes wild!!!
Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

All I can say is this:  I hope you didn't go to bed early on this one.  And in case you did, I'll leave this highlight here for you:

And then there was this classic exchange between the Cubs' and the Reds' Twitter feeds:

That, my friends, is how you drop the mic and walk away.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Addison Russell (.546). First-pitch swingin' on a fastball from Jumbo Diaz and it was a no-doubter.
  • Hero - Jason Heyward (.081). His single in the seventh with the bases loaded was pretty huge itself; had he not gotten a hit there he was pretty much a shoo-in for the Goat podium.
  • Sidekick - Hector Rondon (.069). Closed the door with three whiffs looking to send the crowd home happy. To be fair, though, by the last one I think the home plate umpire was either ready to go home or was late for a meeting at the bar.

THE THREE GOATS: An extremely tight race on the Goat podium in this game, with all three positions separated by a mere .002 margin.

  • Billy Goat / Goat #1 (tie) - Anthony Rizzo (-.098). The play that got him here probably isn't the one you're thinking, namely the flyout in the sixth with a runner on second; it was actually the groundout to lead off the eighth that had the most impact.  The bloop fly that Billy Hamilton chased down in the second didn't help matters either.
  • Billy Goat / Goat #2 (tie) - Kris Bryant (-.098). His groundout to end the seventh with runners on the corners got him the tie for the top spot.
  • Kid - Jon Lester (-.096). In the end it was still a quality start, but going down two runs early put him in a hole that he couldn't escape.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 7: Russell climbs back out of the cellar in emphatic fashion while Lester falls out of the tie at the top of the pack.
