Chicago Cubs Thursday Afternoon Notes

Inaugurating an occasional new feature.

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports
It's a fairly quiet afternoon for the Cubs, so I thought I'd make a "notes" post, which I will do on an occasional basis when the Cubs have a night game and there isn't any big news happening.

Here are a few things that are going on or of interest that you can discuss while we wait for tonight's third game of the Cubs/Reds series at Wrigley Field.

  • ICYMI, lefthander Eric Jokisch was waived by the Cubs and claimed by the Marlins. He'll get more opportunity there and I wish him well. The Northwestern grad posted a 1.88 ERA and 1.535 WHIP in four games (one start) with the 2014 Cubs. That was good enough to give him a positive bWAR -- 0.2 -- for that season. The move leaves an open spot on the 40-man roster.
  • Happy 50th birthday to Hall of Famer Greg Maddux. It's hard to believe that this young-looking kid who grew a mustache to try to look older, has reached the half-century mark.
  • I mentioned this in the comments in the recap to last night's game, but thought it was worth mentioning here: The Cubs have two 10+ walk games so far this year — in eight games. The Cubs had four 10+ walk games in Dusty Baker’s entire Cubs managing tenure — 648 games. All of them were in his first two years.

Have at it. The game preview posts at 5 p.m. CT.
