Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 11

Stop me if you've heard this one before: Jake Arrieta posts another strong start on his way to the Superhero award on Saturday.

Some days, there are only a couple of Jake photos available, so Al gets one and I get the other one. This was the other one.

Somewhere Dexter Fowler can be heard saying "Hey, I hit one too... why am I not in this tweet?"  Don't worry Dexter... we still love you.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Jake Arrieta (.407). Just another day at the office for Jake: Eight pitched, five hits, one walk, eight whiffs. But where was the homer this game, Jake?
  • Hero - Anthony Rizzo (.142). The front half...
  • Sidekick - Jorge Soler (.126). ...and the back half of back-to-back jacks in the fourth.

THE THREE GOATS: For the third straight game there's a podium bump, this time again from the Goats as the -.042 hitting of Arrieta is moved out.  That makes three bumps from the Goats and one from the Heroes in the first 11 games of the season.

  • Billy Goat - Addison Russell (-.126). Ah, the dreaded 6-4-3 double play with nobody out and two on.
  • Goat - Kris Bryant (-.052). Got caught looking at a couple of pitches in his first at-bats.  And unlike other strikeouts looking on the day, his were actually strikes in the zone.
  • Kid - David Ross (-.032). He did have the sac fly in the eighth but by that point the needle was pretty much already pinned to the right side.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 11: Arrieta restarts another mini-cluster of starters at the top, joining Jason Hammel at the top of the list.
