Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 19

It was a very tight race at the top of the Hero podium, but the two home runs by Anthony Rizzo gave him the top step by a nose on Sunday.

I think it's safe to say that Rizzo's heating up.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Anthony Rizzo (.181).  Perhaps he decided that he'd spotted the field enough points on the plus/minus chart before going on a tear toward the top of the field.
  • Hero - Jason Heyward (.179).  Does his 4-for-5 day at the plate have the potential to make the Cuyler voting a little more interesting?  Stay tuned.
  • Sidekick - Jason Hammel (.100).  Had the score not been 8-0 by the middle of the third inning, he might have ended up higher up on the podium.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Kris Bryant (-.017).  I can hear the shouting already, and I know that it's somewhat of a travesty that he had a 2-for-3 day and reached base four times, yet still ended up at the top of the Goats.  It all came down to that first plate appearance.
  • Goat - Miguel Montero (-.012).  By the time he struck out looking in his first plate appearance, the score was already 3-0.  By the time he lined out in his second one, it was already 7-0.
  • Kid - Jorge Soler (-.011).  Pretty much the same story; he definitely stranded more than his fair share of runners but only when the score was 8-0 or better.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 19: Hammel becomes the first player to reach double-digits on the plus/minus chart while Rizzo makes his way back into striking distance of the lead pack.
