Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 20

New, 35 comments

There were a lot of big plays in Tuesday night's game, but the triple by Addison Russell into the teeth of the wind propelled him to the top of the Heroes in the Cubs' 4-3 win.

Hey Rizz... you need to look a little happier, dude.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Addison Russell (.328).  On a night where it looked like it was going to take a lot of small-ball to claw out runs, his booming triple into the gap in right-center came up huge.
  • Hero - Hector Rondon (.155).  I'm probably not the only one who was thinking "Oh, ****" when the ball left Aaron Hill's bat.  Thankfully it turned out to just be a long, high flyout.
  • Sidekick - Adam Warren (.140).  Performed the swingman role to perfection with two 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh.

THE THREE GOATS:

  • Billy Goat - Jason Heyward (-.176).  Some nights you leave six guys on base.  The WPA gods do notice these things, though.
  • Goat - Pedro Strop (-.144).  He hadn't allowed an unintentional walk yet this season until the two he gave up Tuesday night.  He ended up paying for both of them.
  • Kid - Anthony Rizzo (-.063).  His run-scoring "double" in the seventh inning kept him from a worse podium fate. And as you can tell from the tweet above, there was much rejoicing.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 20: Russell takes a big step away from the cellar door while Heyward falls a bit deeper into the quicksand.
