Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 21

He only made it through five innings, but that was all that Jake Arrieta needed to pick up his fourth Superhero of the season on Thursday.

Maybe that was his problem... he was pitching with his eyes closed!

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Jake Arrieta (.153).  What a bum... he didn't even get a quality start.
  • Hero - Anthony Rizzo (.123).  Made his first two plate appearances count with a table-setting walk and a run-scoring double.
  • Sidekick - Ben Zobrist (.117).  Started the scoring with his two-run single for the final podium spot.

THE THREE GOATS: There's another bump on the podium as Arrieta's -.015 hitting is moved out.  It's the 11th bump of the season and the seventh from the Goats.

  • Billy Goat - Jason Heyward (-.043).  I know that he's a slow starter and it's nothing to worry about, but man, minus-16 is an ugly-looking number on the chart when it's still April.
  • Goat - Addison Russell (-.029).  He did walk twice, but the score was already lopsided by the time the walks came and couldn't offset his inning-ending groundout in the first.
  • Kid - Matt Szczur (-.004).  And with Arrieta's bump, Szczur was the only person left under zero on the day.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 21: Arrieta once again moves to the front of the pack while Heyward begins the search for the miner's helmet that exists in the deep recesses of the cellar.
