Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 22

There were heroes on offense late in the game, but the strong seven-inning performance by Jon Lester -- including the great escape in the seventh inning -- pushed him to the top of the class on Friday afternoon.

You can't play it any cooler than this.  (Pun possibly intended.)

Bonus points for the Gatorade mic drop at the end.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

THE THREE HEROES:

  • Superhero - Jon Lester (.277).  Talk about magic tricks... that was quite the Houdini act that he pulled to get out of the seventh inning.
  • Hero - Anthony Rizzo (.157).  How quickly can fates change on the charts?  It was just 13 games ago that Rizzo was at minus-3. He's now at plus-10.
  • Sidekick - Tommy La Stella (.136).  Yes, yes, I know... where's Matt Szczur??  As the Writer's Note says above, it's not my personal opinion that left Szczur off of the podium. It just turns out that a double to lead off the eighth inning of a tie game has more impact than a grand slam when you're already ahead 2-1 in the same eighth inning. And that's why we have the Cuyler poll, because I'm sure that Szczur will get many more votes than La Stella will, and more than justifiably so.

THE THREE GOATS: The Goats get another bump as Lester's -.092 hitting is moved out.  The current tally of pitcher's hitting:  Jason Hammel +3, Lester and Jake Arrieta -1, John Lackey and Kyle Hendricks -3.

  • Billy Goat - David Ross (-.114).  He did tie the game with his single in the fifth, but the bases-loaded inning-ending 4-6-3 in the seventh absolutely killed him.
  • Goat - Jason Heyward (-.089).  I really wish that this wasn't the 10th time this season that he was down here, but it is.  May's just around the corner, folks!
  • Kid - Addison Russell (-.078).  Had a couple of hard-hit balls that died on the track.

RANKINGS THROUGH GAME 22: The pack tightens up again at the front, with Rizzo and Lester making their way into double-digit positives.
